Newton Centre Converted Barn

This 1874 home was originally the barn and blacksmith shop for a historically designated estate in Newton Centre. What was once a cold and dreary blacksmith shop in the 1800s is now the heart of the home. The structure’s soaring and painted wood ceilings provided a canvas easily amenable to modern-day design. On the walls and ceilings, the existing barnwood was replaced with shiplap and the original arched gable window was restored and painted black to make the room’s history pop. Creamy white uppers and faded, earthly olive green lower cabinets felt on trend but at home in a structure that was once unheated and partially exposed to the outdoors.

Upstairs we transformed the primary bathroom and opted for a quarter sawn oak vanity, stained dark to compliment the home’s dark wood floors and the clients’ collection of wood furniture. We carried the burnished brass from the kitchen into the bathroom and used creamy Calacatta marble to keep the room bright and timeless. Expertly crafted wainscoting, similar to wainscoting in the entry also brightens the space.
