west newton bungalow - Newton, MA
Built in 1914, this home was designed in the American Craftsman style by Boston architect Hubert G. Ripley. A 2011 renovation had stripped away much of its original character, and our clients came to us with a clear goal: to restore the home’s Craftsman soul while making room for their own point of view.
Inspired by the husband’s love of the American West and the wife’s desire for a home with more charm, we developed a warm, grounded palette and layered in materials such as natural linen, wool mohair, leather, and grasscloth that subtly echo the stucco exterior. In the entry, we reinstated the original vestibule to create a more welcoming sense of arrival. Throughout the house, touches of blue add vibrancy and keep the rooms from feeling too restrained.
